End of Season Report (Unofficial!)

Unfortunately the season is over for our senior teams with all grades not reaching the finals.  Whilst this is disappointing for players, supporters, sponsors and volunteers, the season has been momentous behind the scenes.

A change in the clubs constitution was implemented to move the AGM from the middle of the year to March/April.  This was necessitated by the need to commence the preparatory/planning processes earlier in the year.  This enables the club to appoint the executive committee/committee much earlier and thus allows more time to plan for the forthcoming season.  This has proved to be a prudent move, with the 2012/13 season being the most organised to date.

The AGM was relatively well attended and resulted in Freddy Adams accepting the Presidency.  Freddy has proved an invaluable asset to the club with his vast knowledge, experience and can-do attitude (the fact that he knows just about everyone in the Darwin sporting community was a bonus!).  Under his leadership the club is well on the way to having a very solid foundation on which to build.

It was also pleasing to see the AGM  unearth some younger talent, many of whom had little experience in the running of a sporting club but made up for it in committment and an eagerness to learn.  The executive committee particularly is to be commended for their tireless efforts and self sacrifice for the benefit of the club.  The next AGM will be held in the next few months and it would be great to see ALL members attend.  Remember, attendance does not require you to join the committee, but does give you a voice concerning the future of the club!  Past players/officials are also encouraged to attend.  Helping out the club is voluntary and any assistance, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant can make a dramatic difference to the success of the club (end of rant!).

The next major acheivement of the club was the founding of a Womens team.  This was instigated by several players who were disappointed with the level of support they received whilst playing for the "big" clubs.  Having a Womens team had not been considered by the committee for the immediate future of the club, but to their credit, the committee realised the inclusion of a Womens team would bring with it numerous benefits.  This has certainly been the case, with the 'Bush Pigs' not only providing financial benefits through increased gate/canteen takings, but more importantly through their social impact on the club.  This has greatly assisted the club to evolve into a family friendly environment.  However, I am reliably informed there may be some contenders for the CF trophy!

The growth of our junior teams has also been noteworthy.  The club fielded two teams this season and the kids enjoyed their footy.  A special mention must be made for the effort, committment and perseverance of Peter and Alesha Sheperd.  They have been the major driving force behind the juniors and are to be commended!

Another notable event of the past season was the 'Pink for a Purpose' ladies day.  This was a charity event with the aim of raising money for the Cancer Council of the NT.  This event was a resounding success with a larger than expected turnout of ladies, all of which enjoyed the day.  Watching the Div 1 boys in their pink jumpers (kindly donated by Sports Agencies) was well worth the ticket price.  These jumpers were auctioned after the game and contributed to the amount raised.

Whilst the 2012/13 season was not as successful on the field as hoped, the growth of the club has been spectacular.  The fundamental changes adopted by the committee has proved successful off the field and will provide a solid financial and organisational foundation on which to build into the future.
